Neshenti I just "found" Houses of Heaven, and I'm so glad I did. It's nearly impossible to pick a single favorite from this LP, since there are so many unique gems to choose from, notably 'Dissolve The Floor', 'All Possible Obstacles Are Present' and 'Sleep', but you'll want to carve out some time to listen to the whole album in its entirety. Just the right amount of tension, punch and otherworldly synth layers throughout. 'Pathwork' and 'Caresses' are beautifully dark closing tracks. Favorite track: Dissolve The Floor.

Sleep 04:11
We feed From each other Blur through one another We taste From another Drown into each other Mirrored glass Gold pinned to walls Above So below Patterns fall And dull to the touch Above So below

Another day A bright night The barren leaves fall A dead street waits You breach our landscapes As sharp as scent As seamless as touch Another time to break out Cold air hangs dark From wire trees So red and ripe To blur the need I dissolve to feed you Deconstruct old lines Cracked floor burns low In sewer seas So red and ripe To blur the need I dissolve to feed you Deconstruct old lines

Breathe Anxious all the time Breathe Take pills all the time View from the tower’s peak So fall for it All the time So fall Try to see them coming to light Can’t tell one from the other Cold dreams coming to light Pouring out Pouring open Breathe Absent all the time Breathe Take pills all the time Burnt wires lost in sleep So fall for it All the time So fall Dull taste Soft light Speak through closed doors Words as evidence Buying time Throw it on Throw it on

Can I sleep inside your sea? A fading blood calls Inching back Cover up each eye to stay Pull apart and peel away Another voice A place between Sharp shadows far from view I’ll never find Removed from sight Envelop all Away Lying at the statue’s feet Shaking color Sinking in desire Curled up in your garden’s gaze Plucking at the fruit you crave Another voice Speaks to me Sharp shadows far from view I’ll never find Removed from sight Envelop all Away
5.
Channeling 03:14
Colorless against the dawn Figures sharpen Hours have gone Blooming open like an eye I absorb you as mine Channeling Splintered light of distant fire Soft and aching to the pyre Blooming open like an eye I am yours and you mine Channeling

Time Apart 03:42
City rots out Streets grow thick Pale lights burn We wait for hours Every dim face Crowding air And nowhere holds close The weight pulls down Into the night Push you out Into the night What do you want? What do you need? Steel totems rise We sleep for hours A wanting seed Red lights Blue films And nothing’s held close The weight pulls down Deep below those sunken eyes The weight pulls down Deep below that sickly skin These days pull down

about

Layering synths, guitars, electronic percussion, and live drums, Houses of Heaven fuses early industrial and techno rhythms with the melodicism of shoegaze and a heavy dose of dub-influenced effects. Formed in Oakland, California by Keven Tecon, Adam Beck, and Nick Ott, the band follows up the Remnant EP with their first full-length album titled Silent Places. Written against the backdrop of the Northern California wildfires, ever-growing tent cities and the continued rise of empty luxury housing in the Bay Area, the album explores the intimate experiences that transpire within the chaotic confines of modern living.

Opener "Sleep" basks in the tension surrounding the album's inception with blown-out kick drums, claustrophobic verses, and deteriorating vocal effects. Sharp arpeggiated synths and woozy strings neutralize the track's subterranean anxiety with texture and sensuality. Produced by Matia Simovich (Inhalt) and with engineering credits that include Monte Vallier (Weekend) and John McEntire (Tortoise), it's a potent introduction to the muscular sound design underpinning the album.

Booming taiko drums sound the beginning of "Dissolve the Floor," the album's most club-ready track. A pulsing arpeggio gives the song its industrial heartbeat while disintegrating tape delay throws menace into the hazy atmosphere. The undulating techno beat breaks and repairs itself with seductive and satisfying timing. "In Soft Confusion" doesn't stray from the album's obsidian narrative as it envisions and ponders the aftermath of human extinction. Sonically speaking, though, it's the album's most uptempo offering with Tecon's supremely infectious chorus vocal hook and Beck's dizzying guitar riffs.

The intricate electronic drum programming is elevated by Ott's live drumming, which lends a refreshingly human touch to the potentially icy, and often mechanical, sonic territory of synth-driven music. Adding density to the album's shadowy allure are the unusual sounds and vintage outboard effects that Tecon and Simovich impressively maneuver into the album's tonal palette. Great care has been taken to finesse familiar pop structures with an inventive edge. It's this mindfulness of past and present that is sure to secure Silent Places as a standout album in the new decade.
